Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (BS OHSAS 18001)

Many larger companies are tendering for contracts where they are required to have BS OHSAS 18001 certification as a prerequisite for award of the contract.
18001 focuses on establishing a Management System for Health and Safety which is based on the plan, do, check, review philosophy of all Management Systems (e.g. BS 9001 Quality System). In other words, its objective is to create a proactive, rather than a static Health and Safety system.

Although smaller companies would not want the expense of gaining 18001 certification, with very little effort, they can align their Health and Safety arrangements with the 18001 Management Systems approach. Apart from creating a more proactive attitude towards Health and Safety within the company, it will greatly reduce the amount of work to be done if the company wanted to seek BS OHSAS 18001 certification in the future.

Ian Swann is a qualified lead auditor for BS OHSAS 18001:2007 and this ensures that all Health and Safety arrangements installed in companies by Ian Swann Associates, will be closely aligned with the 18001 Management Systems approach.

For those companies seeking 18001 certification, we can provide advice and help with establishing a suitable cost effective Health and Safety Management System, which corresponds to the BS OHSAS 18001 philosophy. We can also provide an external auditor service on your established Management System, recommending any changes needed to smooth the path for 18001 certification.
